Yippee.  I heard that everyone coming home and still in China is okay.  Marilyn said they had a ton of e-mails and phone calls when they got home.  Her report on the trip will be coming out really soon.  Can't wait to hear all about it.  What a trip of a lifetime.  I grew up reading books by Pearl Buck and was fascinated by her stories about China.

SUBJECT: ASIA EARTHQUAKE
FROM: Ray and Marilyn McNeal, Midnight Rodeo

We arrived home safely today to the news of the earthquake. We were boarding our plane in Shanghai about that time and did not hear about it until this morning in Tampa. I've emailed Judy to make sure the after shocks did not affect them and will let you know when we hear back from her. We are physically in their time frame so in reality, have been up all night (today here) and day. Tomorrow I'll complete the final report on our incredible trip!
Thank you to all who left messages regarding our safety. We arrived in Ocala at noon today and tended to family business and could not call ALL of you back, but truly appreciate your concern! Until tomorrow.  ShowMing land Annie from Californing left Shanghai one hour before us, so they are okay, too.
Goodnight (or day for our Asian friends)! Ray & Marilyn

NOTE FROM ME:  Judy Chen also wrote and let me know she's okay.  Thank goodness everyone is safe and sound.

Now if we can get rid of the fires in Florida and clean up the mess in the mid part of the East, I'll be happy!!  Aren't you glad I'm not your mother???

Subject: Ohio Line Dance Instructor Meeting re-cap
From: Frank Trace
franktrace@sssnet.com
Once again, a big thank you to all who participated in our 5th meeting of the Ohio Line Dance Instructors group "OLDI". We had 17 instructors in attendance. After introductions and welcoming new instructors, we recapped our March meeting and reviewed the current dance charts. It was noted that many of the top dances on the charts have been taught at our OLDI meetings. As of this meeting we have taught each other 46 different line dances. Pretty amazing! This shows us that we are on the right track. Our next meeting date is scheduled for Sunday, August 3rd. The long break is due to scheduling conflicts in June & July.
Here are the dances that were taught:
Frank Trace taught DUCK SOUP and FEEL GOOD RUMBA. Both dances were choreographed by Frank Trace and will be debuted at the JG2 Line Dance Marathon. Step sheets are available on Frank's web site www.traceofcountry.com Duck Soup is a beginner "swing" line dance and Feel Good Rumba is an easy intermediate rumba style dance. Both dances have music options; country or pop.
Sandy Goodman taught SOUL ENERGY by Michele Perron. This is a fun funky style intermediate dance with great music by Ike Turner.
Linda Christian taught LUCKY ONE by Linda Christian. Linda choreographed this nice easy intermediate dance that works with many different songs.
Amy Auger taught NOTHIN' BOUT LOVE by Rita Arnett. Great music and a fun easy intermediate dance done to the hit song by LeAnn Rimes.
Jamie Wylie taught SHIFF-A-BILLY by Bastiaan van Leeuwen. Good beginner dance to fun country music that makes you smile.
Judy Cain taught PEACHES & CREAM by Metelnick & Biggs and JAZZ IT UP by McEnaney & McAdam. Both are great dances. Peaches & Cream is a beginner level dance with ending choices. Jazz It Up is a very up beat and fun intermediate dance.
Donnie Allen taught AS IF by Junior Willis done to the Sara Evens song. Very nice easy to learn dance. Great for the country crowd.
After a dinner break, many of the instructors stayed for my monthly Line Dance Party at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Canton, Ohio. The dance floor was crowded all night long as we danced all levels of dances. Some of the floor fillers were: SEA SALT SALLY, FIRECRACKER, CHARANGA, HAPPY RADIO, REBEL AMOR, CRAZY FOOT MAMBO, AMOR DE HEILO, FOOLISH, ALLIGATOR ROCK, SHY WALTZ, NOT LIKE THAT, ADAPTABLE, I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT, STEALING THE BEST, COME ON & DANCE, HICKORY LAKE and so many more.
Meetings are opened to all instructors.

SUBJECT:  PLEASE ADD THIS TO RECOMMENDED DANCES
As an instructor and choreographer, like many who read Carol's newsletter, I notice many references from other instructors concerning the latest dances they have taught.

ONE BIG PROBLEM WHEN YOU LIST. You NEED to INCLUDE the CHOREOGRAPHER'S NAME along with the DANCE. Do you realize how many dances have the same name?

Subject: Spanish linedance holiday report
From: Sue Thomas, St Albans, UK
I have just returned from an excellent holiday in Calpe hosted by Alison Biggs & Peter Metelnick - I think the most enjoyable linedance holiday I have been on!
My highlights:
The hotel - superb facilities including a massive sprung wooden dancefloor (great not to have to dance on unforgiving tiles, & no pillars either!); excellent sound system; lovely pool area; incredible spa (I never knew there were so many ways to enjoy jets of water!); fantastic choice of delicious food.
The area - 3 minutes walk to a lovely sandy beach; the beautiful cliff walk to an excellent bar/restaurant; the fantastic half day trip inland to the stunning mountain fortress/village of Guadalest.
Our rep, Sue, who provided a real 'personal touch' (the tour company is well-named) as she was with us the whole time to help things run smoothly, & even managed to learn some dances!
Last but not least the dancing! 5 morning workshops & 6 social evenings, with expert teaching by Alison & Peter & excellent DJing by Alison. I also thoroughly enjoyed the guest teaches by John Grrowler Rowell & Debbie Ellis, & Paul Bailey's performances on 2 evenings, which all helped to make for a very varied week, with a great range of dances/music for all levels & tastes.
The dances taught are listed on Alison & Peters' website at http://www.thedancefactoryuk.co.uk/PeterandAlisoninSpain2.pdf . My personal favourites (so difficult to choose, so many good dances!) were Winner at a Losing Game (Peter) & Like a Dream (Alison & Peter). It was also great to relearn Destination Dancefloor, a fabulous dance, and to end each evening dancing Could It Be Forever, another beautiful dance which deserves to be danced more widely.
All-in-all a fun week of dancing & relaxation, with a great bunch of people. Many thanks Alison & Peter - roll on next year!

SUBJECT: NEED MUSIC FOR THE DANCE STREET OF HOPE
FROM: NANCY/ MI
I really like the dance Street of Hope choreographed by Timothy To and Theresian Tam. The music for the dance is On the Street Where You Live by Mariya Takeuchi. I have tried to find the music on the legal sites and Amazon with no success. If choreographers want teachers to teach their dances, then why do they choose music that is impossible to find or costs a ridiculous amount if it can be purchased? This trying to find music for dances gets frustrating. Has anyone taught this dance and where did you obtain the music? THANKS!

Subject: Eastern's 2008
Last weekend I attended Eastern's outside of Washington, DC. Having attended the Boston Linedance Showdown, the line dance workshops at Eastern's were pretty much a repeat, but great second teaches nonetheless. Friday night was meagerly attended and Saturday night was not much better, but DJ Jam did a fabulous job playing ALL requests as well as some old classics that are not normally played at large eventsDO YOUR THING, COLDBLOODED, AMERICAN POP, M.J. MOVES (to the song for Funkafied Blues) and JIVE WALKIN'to name a few.

Dance workshops I attended:
GET ON THE FLOOR (robinson): fun, upbeat dance to an old Johnny Gill track called The Floor. Room to play around with for dancers to add their own styling. A well-choreographed dance. So Get On The Floor and have fun!
ALABAO (Andrew, Simon, Sheila): never learned one of their dances, but this was a fun cha; felt like a more upbeat "Cruisin'" kind of dance.
SMOKIN' CHA (robinson, szyminski): choreography is so hot...it's smokin'! I like how dance styles blendrumba and cha-chaincluded a changing of counts/ syncopations. Recommend this to everyone, especially those that are looking to learn dances to country songs.
THROW IT ON ME (mundy): funky Guyton choreography and song that is fast and thankfully only 2 mins. He's right, dancing this back-to-back will put someone in the hospital, but I did just that both Saturday and Sunday and I could barely walk to the water cooler! Leaving Boston I thought I would never get this and after a second teach, and weekend walkthroughs at Eastern's, I had it! Come Tampa at the end of May, I'll master it.
GET MY DRINK ON (mundy) - learned this in FL earlier this year...heck...he choreographed it at our hotel in Ocala, FL. Fun, fast-paced dance to the country song by Toby Keith. I had to retake it as a refresher since it is not danced locally and I keep forgetting the sequence. Leave your arm and hand bits to THROW IT ON ME and break out them country-line-dancin' boots for this one...just leave your drinks on the sidelines. Country-only venues, this one's for you, and if you're John Lindo, you'll 2-step around the line dancers.
FREAKED OUT (detweiler): fast-paced dance to the popular Miley Cyrus song that is on Top40 radio. I especially like how the syncopated cha steps match the s-s-s-stutter part of the song.
FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND (musk): learned this locally earlier this year, but my footprints got washed away by the ocean. Great re-teach for me by Rainy Dae. This one's a challenging NC2 that is well-choreographed. Definitely a recommend one to learn.
BRUCIE (blevins): never heard this one before, but those who began line dancing before me slightly remembered this from "years" ago. This is a 96-count dance that I hope gets revived as it was probably released years too early. Definitely needing a second teach, but very fun. Get your protractors ready as the dance is very much at the angles.
LOST IN YOU (mcenaney): good re-teach for me from last Wednesday night when Lil' Rob taught this beautiful NC2. Classic Rachael choreography that goes well to the music.

Overall had a fun time. Hope to see more of the DC Area dancers out next year.

From: Lynne Martino,

SHEEPSHEAD BAY, BROOKLYN; Instructors: Mike O'Brien, Danchie1128@aol.com & Joanne (westernsteppers.com)
Joanne taught: HAPPY RADIO, Frank Trace; CINCO DE MAYO; REDNECK WOMAN & BARN DANCE.
Mike taught:PEACHES & CREAM, Peter Metelnick & Alison Biggs, 32ct/4w/beg. Music: You're Sixteen by Ringo Starr.Easy fun dance. Class loved it.
SMOKIN CHA, John Robinson & Jo Thompson Szymanski, 48ct/4w/inter, Music: No Smoke Without Fire by James Hunder. Classy dance with stylish moves, including a cool passe doble pose, to a rhumba/cha song. The cha portion of the dance is a little challenging but certainly do-able. No tags or restarts.
Reviewed:ITS MURDA, Neville Fitzgerald & Julie Harris, 64ct/2w/inter; PHENOMENON, Paul McAdam, 64ct/2w/inter/adv; FOLLOW ME HOME, Teresa Lawrence & Vera Fisher, 48ct/2w/inter.
BROOKLYN: Instructors: Tom & Ellen Dailey, Cityline Dancers, citylineead@aol.com, www.citylinedancers.net
PEACHES & CREAM:Fun dance was great for our beginners. Like the alternative endings for the last 4 counts of the dance, which made it interesting for the rest of the class.
NO TRICKS, Vivienne Scott, 32ct/4w/beg/inter, Music: Don't Play With My Heart by Modern Talking. Nice dance that went well to the music. Has 2 easy tags on the back wall. Class liked the dance.
DRIZABONE, Ria Vos & Francien Sittrop, 32ct/4w/inter, Music: Real Love by Drizabone. We finally got around to teaching this dance. The dance was easy. The music was great.
X-RATED, Not sure of the choreographer, 64ct/4w. Fun dance. There was plenty of room for attitude. Had what looked like a little tea cup move, also pigeon toe swivels traveling right & left with arms and head moves.
WINNER AT A LOSING GAME, Peter Metelnick, 32ct/4w/inter, Music: Winner at a Losing Game by Rascal Flatts. Dance went really well to this great song. Had no problems with the 2 restarts. Class loved it. Another winner by Peter.

QUEENS, LITTLE NECK: Instructor: Lynne Martino, Lynne's Dance Crew, Wiska51@aol.com
Beginner Plus: DHSS,Gayle Teather, 32ct/4w/beginner hustle line dance, Music: Coffe by Supersister.Beg plus dancers got this one right away and enjoyed it immensely. Very popular with all levels of dancers in our area. We also use the music, BACK TO LOUISIANA for a country alternative.
Intermediates: PIRATE ON THE RUN, Vivienne Scott & Kim Ray, 48ct/4w/inter waltz line dance, Music: Pirate on the Run by Pat Monahan. This was a requested teach from one of my dancers. She learned it at the Tim Gillis Weekend from Vivienne and fell in love with it. On her recommendation, I taught it. It was a big hit with the class. They learned it quickly and loved the change of pace with a waltz. This one is a winner in my book.

SEA SALT SALLY, Kate Sala, 96ct/4w/beg+, Music: Sea Salt Sally by Rick Guard. Don't let all those counts scare you. Very easy steps with first 24 cts repeat twice. Catchy song makes you want to bop along. This was a requested teach.
YAMIN IT, Johanna Barnes, 32CT/2W/INTER,Music: Yamin It by Elliott Yamin. Nice hustle type rhythm combined with Johanna's great choreography makes for a great dance. Seems harder than it really is at first, With a few repetitions, entire class was enjoying it.
PHENOMENON, Paul McAdam, 64ct/2w/inter/adv, Music: Phenomenon by LL Cool J. Fabulous dance & we're all aiming to get those hip shakes just like Paul.
Review: OPA OPA, Lynne Martino; PEACHES & CREAM, Peter & Alison; IT'S MURDA, Fitzgerald & Harris;MACK THE KNIFE, McEnaney & HIGHER & HIGHER, Max Perry.
Friday VFW Lesson:THE OUTBACK< Gordon Elliott, 48CT/4W/INTER,Music: I'm a Member of the Outback Club by Lee Kernagham. dONE IN ROUNDS A LA Row Row Row your boat. Great laughing fun to a real oldie but goodie from the archives. Many had danced it years ago and were happy to see it back on our dance floor. Hint: Weat Blinders!!

SUFFOLK; Instructor: Linda Stuart, Dancing with Linda, Luv2stomp1@aol.com
RIDE THE CLOUDS< Heather Frye, 52ct/4w/inter, Music: Would You Ride With Me by Josh Turner. Part of the appeal for my group was the music. Instead of putting tags in the dance, Heather made this a 52 ct dance which works well. The sequences are made up of basic steps which helps people learn this dance, but the music is very fast. Most people watching us want to learn it.
MERCY ME, Alison Biggs, 64ct/4/w/inter,Great dance, great music. The dance steps go well to the music. Do not let the sequence stop you from trying. It's got a 64,48,64,48,40 sequence. the dance is laid out very well so that it all makes sense.
CRAZY FOOT MAMBO, Paul McAdam, 32ct/2w/beg/inter, Music: If You Wanna Be Happy. This dance is #1 on the world linedance newsletter for a reason. It's so much fun and everyone loves it. Some interesting steps for the intermediate crowd.

SUBJECT:  WHAT MIKE BELK IS TEACHING IN THE UK
Black & Gold- Another great dance from Teresa & Vera with great step sequences, also a super track from Sam Sparro, just a little bit different! The dance has become more popular over the weeks.
Laid Back 'N Low Key- 32 count by Peter & Alison gone down very well with the Improver class & also enjoyed by the Intermediate's due by and large to the great track from Alan Jackson.
Devil's Beat- I was a little disappointed in this dance from Kate Sala I don't think it lives up to the vibrant track by Sandi Thom, it had a 'neutral' reception from the class
In God's Hands- Wow ! This is a superb waltz from Francien Sittrop, Iris van Heesch & Katrin Gabler to a equally superb track from Nelly Furtado. A little tricky at first with the 2 restarts & tag but well worth the effort. The step sequences of reverse twinkle, sweeps & turns flow with the music and if you like waltz's then you will most definitely enjoy this.

SUBJECT:  FROM BONNY SCOTLAND
FROM:  BIG DAVE
Pauline & I do just one event in Scotland each year & I must say we really look forward to doing it - It's a mega 7 hour drive for us (Especially in the van !!) but it's worth it - At Stirling's King Robert Hotel, we've been lucky enough each year to get a crowd of around 60-70 dancers, many of whom have become regulars & very good friends - Always a warm welcome for sure from a fun crowd.
The 1st year we went up with Dee & Craig (With guest spots from our good friends Mad Lizzie & Pete Harkness too), the 2nd year with Robbie, Kate & Olli - And this our 3rd year MaggieG, with Pete Harkness with us all weekend too as guest choreographer - We had a real blast again.
Maggie taught a bunch of her latest dances which you'll have read about already, but the highlight was a hot new 32/4 mainstream pop one called Stronger, which as well as being a hit teach was a personal thrill for me because Maggie wrote it especially for me to teach on my US travels !! :-) .... Watch out for the sheet real soon .............
Pete did us proud too - He's had a heavy work schedule recently with his day job so has been a touch quite on the choreography front, but as ever he did the business - First of all with a lovely country waltz called Angels Like Her - And for sure a big hit, a latin/pop cha cha to a cool David Civera track called No Bastara, one he co-wrote with Terry Cullingham, who was also there with us - Both these already on my web site ................ My teach for the weekend was Robbie's Like A Hero - A great new dance which everyone seemed to enjoy - Pete also did a cool Robbie country improver one Budwiser which was an equally popular teach.
Looking forward to May 2009, when we'll be back to party with our good friends Shaz & Dee.
Cheers.
