SUBJECT: ASIA CRUISE FINAL REPORT
FROM: Ray and Marilyn McNeal, Midnight Rodeo, Ocala, FL

God Bless America! We've returned home after 26 hours of travel time after a truly amazing trip! Judy and Larry Chen are gracious, generous hosts, and made sure every moment of our time in China was an adventure! The first two reports were about the cruise that ended Wednesday morning. This report is about the Chens, the city of Shanghai and the memories we'll have forever.

Shanghai is a city of about 20 million people. It is nothing less than suicide to drive in Shanghai. Cars, buses, trucks, motor scooters, bicycles and pedestrians are all on the road at the same time, going in all different directions at the same time, no stopping. There are no rules. Three lanes are enough room for five lanes of cars. Several lanes merge into one. Everyone just goes - and somehow, they survive!

We ate only Asian food this whole week, always served family style on a big lazy-susan in the middle of the table. We used chopsticks and had something different at every meal. Judy ordered for everyone. We asked what we were eating, took pictures of several dishes and it was fresh, delicious and so much of it! We enjoyed it all. Jill (our cruise DJ) had Taco Bell withdrawals, but recovered in the Atlanta airport on her way home!

Judy planned each day to the fullest with both new and old friends. The following is a mere glimpse of our travels.

Wednesday after the cruise: Dropped off our luggage at our apartment overlooking the city. We all immediately went shopping in a district known as Old Town to buy pearls and silks scarves. It was a great experience. That evening, compliments of the Chens, we had dinner at a 6 STAR restaurant on the 54th floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the highest hotel in the world. Rachael's parents, Gillian and Ian joined us. The hotel is located in "The Bund," the center of Shanghai's financial and business district. The dinner, the view, and the company were exquisite. Ray and I went up to the Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor just to look out over the city. Afterwards, we walked along the Huangpu River, filled with evening boat traffic, many of them beautifully lit in colored lights and designs. Our first evening in Shanghai was just perfect!

Thursday: Good thing we missed breakfast because Scott ate all the dumplings! Off shopping again and met ShowMing & Tom, Linda, Judy's sister, Eddie and other friends for a wonderful brunch. Said goodbye to Scott and Jill who headed home. Rachael and I got facials and massages, Ray got a foot massage and Tony got a back massage! Off to more shopping (Judy is amazing!) and a quick change for dinner for 10 at a famous popular local spot called the Nawling Restaurant. Incredible amount of food - didn't recognize a thing but sampled ALL of it - WITH chopsticks! On to a nightspot called The ARK, good band, expensive drinks, contemporary young crowd.

Friday: Went back to Old Town (a collection of small shops located in very old buildings, a famous tea house, and Temple of the Town God) shopping AGAIN and then a great lunch with Larry. He gave us a complete tour of his very interesting factory, ChemTech, which manufactures a wide variety of wall finishes that are not paint, stucco, or plaster. These wall coverings replace all three and they are flexible and durable. Then off to the tailor where I ordered a blouse and vest, Rachael ordered 3 dresses, Tony a suit and Jill had two jackets made earlier before she left. All our clothing was made that afternoon and delivered later the same night. We shared another terrific evening meal and then to bed before midnight - we leave for "sight seeing" at 6:45 AM!

Saturday: Visited the capital city of Hangzhou and the famous Ling Yin Temple, a Buddhist temple founded about 400 AD, and after Judy's version of a "light lunch" spent a wonderful day on West Lake, known for fresh water pearls, silk factory, a special kind of tea and stories. Fong Gua Ping guided our canopied wooden boat and 9 of us enjoyed a lovely day together. Larry took us ALL to the famous Kamii Japanese restaurant for world class sushi and other special dishes. The presentation of food was wonderful! Only our pictures and our memories of tonight can begin to describe it!

Sunday - Mother's Day. Goodbye to Rachael and Tony who left at 7AM. Off to Zhu Jia Jiao, the "Venice of Shanghai," an ancient fishing village on manmade canals and 36 stone bridges that connect nine streets. The city's history dates back 5000 years, but the existing town is 700 years old. The most famous bridge is the Fang Sheng Qiao, the "Setting Free Bridge" where fish are released. Shopped, ate green tea ice cream, another "light lunch" at Bao Choo Hu Tong and we were stuffed. Bought dancing shoes and barely saved 30 minutes to get ready for Mother's Day Dinner for 12 at a local restaurant. We felt very honored to be included at this special table of their close friends.

The Chens are the ultimate hosts, especially Judy - a great tour guide, bargainer, and exceptional driver! They made this trip an incredible adventure for us and as a result, the world became smaller. We cannot watch coverage of the earthquake and simply dismiss it. Our hearts and prayers go out to those families.

THANK YOU Judy and Larry! We appreciate your kind and generous hospitality and your friendship. There will be pictures on our website soon and stories we'll share with everyone, but our best memories cannot be expressed in words or pictures. Only WE can truly appreciate how special this week in China has been. AND TO THINK IT ALL BEGAN WITH LINE DANCING!

SUBJECT:  DANCE REVIEWS FOR APRIL AND EARLY MAY
FROM:  BIG DAVE
Hi all,
My reviews on the dances I've taught during April &early May at my Mainline & Newline classes ------- Caught up with them on the flight to the States - Some great dances - My own favourite teaches were Paul's Bring It (Also really liked Shaz's Pick Up My Stroll & Niel's On The Way) ..... And Kate's Fire On Ice (Also really liked Kim's Inside Out & Paul's Wonderful) ........... As is mostly the case I liked them all & it's hard to pick !!!! :-)
I ramble on a bit this month - It kept me occupied some of the way to New York !!!!!!!!!!! so I'll not clog the lists with all of them, rather just give you the link for those interested ..........................
www.bigdavegastap.com/dancereviewsout/April 2008.doc
I attach a few of them below ..................
Dave.
Fire On Ice (Kate Sala)
Mark Medlock (Why This Kiss)
Intermediate
Dance 8 Music 8
64/2
Great beat - Some really neat dances out to Mark Medlock - Too many some might say - But not me - What great music & great dances - This one is no exception - A many ways Kate won't mind me saying that in some places this has a Robbie/Peter-Alison feel about it but in others it's classic Kate too - I'll not say which is which !! J but overall it's a great dance & the Mainline class love it - I especially like the challenging syncopated Monterey bit in the middle which keeps you well in gear.
Need No Other (Maggie Gallagher)
Rodney Crowell (Don't Need No Other)
Improver
Dance 8 Music 8
64/4
Great fun - Great track - Cool swing - A tester for Improvers because it's fast but cool moves for them to do - Especially Kick/Cross/Back sequence & the really cool Jazz Box with Swinging Clicks - I also love the little run at the end which hits the beat really well - Love it & so do the Beginner/Improver (& Mainline) classes - Come & do it with me at my JG2 workshop on the Thursday (Along with Never A Thought - See later - A MaggieG double bill J).- Ask me about Maggie's new one Stronger too - Awesome new pop dance with cool moves for sure - Derek will love this one !! J (If you're reading this Derek we've got a present from Maggie for you !!)
Diva's Niteclub (Maurice Rowe)
Toya (Moving On)
Intermediate
Dance 9 Music 10
32/4
Must say of all the great dances I've done during April I'm a touch disappointed that this one has not been a bit more popular - The Newline class are dancing it for sure, but not quite with the buzz I'd hoped for - For me it's an awesome track & a lovely dance from Maurice - Love the 1 & 1/4 Ronde move, the full turn into a chase turn sequence & the lovely Jazz type fall-away turns.
Wonderful (Paul McAdam)
Annie Lennox (Wonderful)
Intermediate
Dance 9 Music 10
32/2
Nightclubs rule just lately - This one is awesome - And a bit like Cry To Me I guess this one for me anyway shows that they don't have to be hard to be good - The track makes it great & the break in the music from smooth to funky is just cool & different - Classic nightclub steps - Bring It was the Newline hit at Prestatyn & Wonderful was the Mainline one - But it's one which many of the Newliners are enjoying equally as well - As is the case with Cry To Me (in comparison).
Ready To Go (Robbie M. Hickie)
Room 2012 (Naughty But Nice)
Intermediate
Dance 9 Music 8
64/2
Almost a funky Robbie one, who often says to me "I don't do funky" - This one is a cool funky track with more traditional/classic Robbie moves, which means that many are equally enjoying it to the Sara Evans country track too - Trickier & more interesting than your regular Robbie dance, so maybe won't be quite as popular as usual ............ Check out Like A Hero, that's going to be Robbie's next smash hit I think.
Inside Out (Kim Ray)
Roch Voisine (On The Outside)
Intermediate
Dance 9 Music 9
32/4
I was thrilled for Kim when she won 'Rising Star'at this years Crystal Boot Awards - I've works with Kim a few times & she's a lovely lady in dance - It was a travesty when It's Up To You did not win an award last year - So this makes it right - We had a fun time in Bournemouth last year when Kim was guest choreographer along with Viv Scott at our Maggie G weekend - Kim, Viv & Maggie doing the Dippy Chicks routine will be one of those life time memory moments - Anyway Inside Out is a lovely smooth nightclub & dare I say I think it's in the same league as It's Up To You ............ Check it out & don't miss out on a lovely dance.
On The Way (Niels Poulsen)
Billy Porter (Love Is On The Way)
Intermediate
Dance 9 Music 9
78/2
I'm not a big waltz fan - On the Mainline side I'm still really enjoying Mark & Jan's Lovers Prayer - On the Newline side I can't remember the last one I enjoyed (I'll not look back to find it !! J) .... Anyway this is a lovely smooth classy waltz from Niels, really well received by the class - It flows really well - Full of classic waltz moves put together in a new & very enjoyable way - Looking forward to dancing this one with the Danish Newliners in June .......Also Father Figure Cha & Crazy Butterfly - Cya there guys - It's an honour to be invited back to DJ for you
Bring It (Paul McAdam)
Danny K (All About You)
Advanced
Dance 10 Music 10
64/2
My favourite of the month - I enjoyed the challenge of learning it from the script !!! - So did the class - It's a classic funky Paul dance - Packed with new & cool moves - And just the week after I taught this we were lucky to do it with Paul at MIL Dragonfest - When Paul demod the dance we could hardly recognise it but we no have some of the styling & the Newline class love it - I especially like the Hitchy/Leany/Poppy bit !! J & the cool 1a2 side/ball/step sequences at the end - Just wish I had a bit more of Paul's styling !!! Looking forward to having Paul at Leeds Newline in September with Scott & Guyton ......... But you've got to give him credit too for such a diverse range of dances - You won't find as much as a quality range between Crazy Foot Mambo, the latest No.1 dance both sides of the pond & the likes of Bring It !! .......... Also the likes of Cry To Me, which must be on the 'classic' list by now - Well done to Paul - My Georgie Toon Army supporting marra !! J ........ Looking forward to doing a fun weekend with Paul next June in Newcastle.
Crazy Butterfly (Niels Poulsen)
Crazy Town (Butterfly)
Higher Intermediate
Dance 10 Music 9
64/4
Fast & funky - Great track - A challenge to learn & teach & dance but the class were up for it & really enjoyed it - More like advanced I'd say !! ........... Niel's Tell Me is still popular & his recent funky hit Miss You 2 is also a huge floor-filler - Niels is a good friend who with his Danish Newliners supports our Newline event in the UK each year & has an equally good event in Denmark too - Another on-the-up choreographer who also turns his hand to equally cool Beginner/Improver/Intermediate dances - Niels is on the bill at this years Tampa Bay Classic - Check out his workshops there - Really sorry Pauline & I will miss it this year, but will be back in 2009 with MaggieG.
Pick Up My Stroll (Shaz Walton)
Madonna (4 Minutes)
Higher Intermediate
Dance 10 Music 10
64/2
OK I'm bias I admit it - Shaz is one of our best friends - She helps me out in so many ways - And like Dee & Maggie too was there amongst a true band of friend to help Pauline through her recent illness over the last 2 years ......... That said I still say to all that Shaz is on an awesome roll of great Newline dances over the last couple of years - It perhaps started back in Tampa two years ago when Sexy Back rocked - Or last year when Freaky Skillz rocked ....... And most recently a string of great dances, not least Killa Appetite, which is her latest floor-filler - Pick Up My Stroll is equally good & a huge hit with the Newline crowd - I could pick bits out but it's just 100% cool funky - If you've not done it check this one out at JG2 if you are there, where it is one of Nigel's teaches ......... We are enjoying Shawty Get Loose too (See later below) - And Shaz's new nightclub Chasing Pavements which was a big hit at Bossyboot Sue's & Neville/Julie's recent Funk 'n Cheap weekend ................ And I hope you like our Searchin' too which I'm teaching at JG2 !!!!! J Shaz will be at Worlds at Orlando at the end of the year for sure - And hopefully at JG2 next year too - Well done Shaz xx ............... Looking forward to partying with Dee at this years JG2 too - Dee's taking some great dances, including her smash Awards hit teach Footprints In The Sand - Check them out if you are going - Well done Dee too xx

SUBJECT:  ASIA CRUISE 2008
FROM:  ftjtan@yahoo.com
It was so fun to have participated in the Asia Cruise 2008. Rachael brought her twin sister (mom) this time. Rachael's dad is such a wonderful gentleman . (He has to be like that because we were in the same dinner table for the whole week. There were 4 of us, plus Tony, of course.) Marilyn and Ray are so passionate, I wish Ray's surgery will go as smoothly as possible. We will pray for you. Simon and Rachael were really happy and were really humorous. If you could hear laughter, Simon and Rachael would soon follow during out bus ride. Those two sang beautifully on the bus. Those jokes made us cried with laughter. But they just kept on going and going and going....just like the Energizer battery. There was no way to stop them. Jill was a great teacher when she taught us "Bring It". I had to put lot's tiger balm on my knees before I could walk normally again. We had Scott named as #1 from the US. Scott even proved himself as a great leader when he
returned our dancing privileges to us on the cruise. Through his effort, we were able to use the wooden dancing floor to do our dance.
Judy, thank you for all the arrangements you've made for us! Two thumbs up!!!
Please check the picture I posted on Click link to view picture
Especially, for the people who had to leave earlier due to all the LOL's during the cruise. >-<

You can download them off the webpage or email me if you have any problems. If you can't make this registration deadline, the pre registration deadline is June 1st but of course you can always magically appear and register on site.

Please make plans to join us for this abbreviated weekend and magically recharge your dance spirit but if you can't come for both days, well by all means at least join us for a day of classes or a night of magical partying!

SUBJECT: CHOOSING MUSIC
FROM: palmcc@bellsouth.net

Nancy in Michigan made a good point when she mentioned how frustrating it is not to be able to find music selections for particular dances. Choreographers often are inspired by a particular song and we get some great dances as a result. But here's a general request to choreographers (and I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask):
1: Be specific about your track. Often there are several versions by an artist on multiple CDs, and many versions by other artists. Different versions can vary in tempo and length, and may not work with the steps as choreographed.
However,
2: If possible, especially if you are in Europe or Asia or Australia and have chosen a track that may not be widely available in the US, list alternate tracks that you know will work for your dance.
3: Because many instructors teach in venues that play only country music, please list an alternate country track (or two!) on your step sheet. Barring that, at least include the BPM to help in finding an alternate.
I know this takes extra time, but we want to do your dances justice. If you choose the music and the alternates yourselves, this helps you get your dances done and promoted, and it helps us do them the way you intended.

Re: Alternate Music For Max Perry's Heartache Hustle
From: Sue Hall

Does anyone have some alternate song choices they're using for Heartache Hustle? One of my classes doesn't like the Freemason's song that it's choreographed to. I'd still like something upbeat and non-country so if you have some suggestions, I'd appreciate them. Thanks!

SUBJECT: Music for "On The Street Where You Live" by Mariya Yakeuchi
FROM: John Robinson

This is in response to Nancy's query regarding "On The Street Where You Live" by Mariya Takeuchi. This is the first track on her album "Denim," which I currently have in stock, and which also includes the beautiful track used for Michael Barr's dance "Doors Of Life." Japanese imports usually cost $25-$30 (not including shipping), but I'm selling this CD for $18 plus shipping. Contact me directly to order.
Mariya Takeuchi is a Japanese artist, and her music is not considered "hard to get" in Japan. I'm sure dancers in other countries think some of our songs are difficult to find! Also please remember that I specialize in locating those difficult-to-find and import CDs.
Keep on dancin' and keep it fun,

Subject: B-DAY DANCE PARTY
Date: Wed, 14 May 2008 12:37:15 -0400

.ExternalClass .EC_hmmessage P{padding:0px;}.ExternalClass body.EC_hmmessage{font-size:10pt;font-family:Tahoma;} Can you believe a year has gone by all ready? I can't. I got a few emails asking when and where this years bday/gratitude dance was going to be. I've been so wrapped up in my daughter's illness and my own injury that my 'pity party' had consumed me and I forgot how close my bday is.
I think last year was a great time and place, so this year lets do the same.....WEDS MAY 21ST NEW YORK,NEW YORK 7:30 TILL CLOSE.
HERE IS A LINK TO LAST YEARS PICTURES AS A REMINDER
As there are a few new addy invited this year, here is a little history about the party.
On Christmas eve 2001, I was on foot in a parking lot when I was struck down by a moving car. The driver didn't stop and wasn't found. Plates, screws and cages in my neck, 4 spinal discs reputed, muscled torn away from shoulder blade and tons of nerve damage and me in a wheel chair being told I may not walk again. There I stayed for 1 1/2 years, alone and scared as I lost my husband suddenly only 10 days before and had no family here. Soon my dog, Powder, became my only company. The pain program I was on would have dropped an elephant. I lost my placement in many dance comps as I had to be replaced and that was my income. It took a long time to get there and usually you have to wait for someone to de in order to get on that panel in the ballroom world. Had to sell the villa, most of my belongings and found a fixer upper on the south side. No income and grief about did me in. Anger can be a great motivate and in 03 I finally began to get up and out of the chair and taught myself to walk a little at a time. I would watch dance tapes and listen to my favorite music from current to years gone by. Music is a great healer and soon I was able to just use a walker and boogie in place.
By early 03 I was getting around without a walker and had stopped all pain meds by then, even though the pain was still great. I promised myself to remember to be grateful each day for the small stuff in life.
I bet I put on 75 lbs sitting in that chair, and began to drop that weight, but knew I had to get out and dance. This is when I began to meet the local dancers in the area. In May of that year one of my first students had a birthday dinner and dance for me at T-bones with my new dancing friends. That was the first time I felt happy and loved in a long time.
I was so grateful for everyone's support that a few of us promised to get together each b-day month as a reminder not only for me, but for them as well, to remember just how lucky we really are. During the hear we are reminded to reach out side ourselves and do something for others. Be grateful each day for the small stuff and not to take ourselves to seriously. After all, if you can't laugh at yourself, someone will be glad to do it for you.....lol.
Enough about all that......please RSVP ASAP so can get things in order. LiFE KEEPS US SO BUSY THAT FOR SOME , THIS IS THE ONLY TIME WE SEE EACH OTHER ALL YEAR. MAYBE WE SHOULD CALL IT 'SAME TIME NEXT YEAR DANCE PARTY'
Love to all and can't wait to see you. MY GIFT WILL BE YOUR PRESENTS

SUBJECT: MUSIC RESPONSES
FROM: NANCY/MI
Just wanted to thank the many folks who responded to my request. Even though all of us are miles apart, Carol"s newsletter keeps us only an email away. Knowing that people took time out of their busy day to answer my request is truly inspirational. Carol has built a family of line dancers who reach all over the world. Thank you line dance friends.

SUBJECT:   JG 2 LINE DANCE MARATHON PARADE (THE THEME THIS YEAR IS MILITARY) NORTH CAROLINA
I think what would fit the theme is current and former Scouters and Guide leaders. I still have my uniform hanging in my closet although I've been out of Scouts for quite a few years. I think the group would look good on parade plus we could trade stories about what crazy things kids do especially at camps. Any takers?

SUBJECT: J.J Jam 2008, November 20-23 in Indianapolis, Indiana
FROM: John Robinson
It's only 188 days until the hot new all LINE DANCE event: J.J Jam 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our fabulous staff includes Jamie Marshall, Joanne Brady, Junior Willis, Karen Hedges and very special guest Cato Larsen from Norway. We have a lot of unique activities planned, and some surprises, too! The event kicks off with a welcome party Thursday evening and continues Friday and Saturday with workshops for beginners as well as more experienced dancers. Of course there will be plenty of open dancing too, with our delightful DJs: Jill Babinec, Tim Hand and Alice Daugherty. Wednesday my partner Chris and I visited our host hotel - the recently renovated Marriott East - to check out the lunch buffet; we had our choice of a wide variety of yummy dishes including fruits, vegetables, salads, rice, baked pasta, baked chicken, whole grain rolls, and a multitude of desserts. Everything was very tasty, and at a price of only $8.95, we definitely got our money's worth. It's just one more way you're guaranteed to have a super-terrific jammin' time at J.J Jam 2008. For more details and a registration form, check out our website: www.jjjam2008.com. Don't delay, register today!!
Keep on dancin' and keep it fun,

SUBJECT: THANKS TO PATRICK FLEMING (FLORIDA)
FROM: Anita Barrett / anitabrt@mindspring.com

I want to thank Patrick Fleming for taking over the instructor spot vacated by Glenda Harney last month at the County Line in Melbourne, Fla. We miss Glenda, but Patrick has done a wonderful job making the job his own. He seems to have so much fun teaching the dances that it radiates to the dancers. We lost a few "regulars" when Glenda left but I hope they will be encouraged to return and join in the fun.

SUBJECT:  WHAT GRAHAM AND KATHY ARE TEACHING IN THE UK
This week we were only going to do a review and at the last minute Peter Metelnick was telling us how well this dance had gone on there week in Spain LIKE A DREAM 4 wall 64 count Intermediate Music It's your World Now- Eagles from the CD Long Road out of Eden. Cannot remember doing a dance to the Eagles before, but could be wrong. Its a nice slow dance, just what is needed for the Summer, Quite an easy teach no tags or restarts, but enough in it to keep you interested. There is an extra quarter turn at the end of the sequence, that when reading the script seems odd when walking through it, but all falls into place when danced. The dance was well received and can see why it was the hit of the week.
Recapped Saucy Salsa by Lil Rob this has not gone down as well as expected, not enough in the dance for our crowd. Although they like the music for this one.
Recapped LIKE A HERO by Robbie McGown Hickie, a big hit with the class 2 tags and they are very easy to spot. Thank Robbie has a Number 1 here.
Also recapped FIRE ON ICE Kate Sala a dance that has gain momentum, at a Social on Friday it filled the floor and those that did not know it wanted to learn it, A really great dance, and one you should consider teaching. Well worth looking at.
LOOKING FOR LOVE another Peter and Alison dance to O Carol by Barbados, easy little dance that has done well too. Also of course RAMA LAMA DING DONG which surprised us by being an instant hit FUN FUN dance (if you can stop falling about laughing while doing it.)
Videos of all dances on site.
