Subject: AMATO'S & MIRANDA'S "SWING TIME" SHOW REVIEW
From: thejamiemarshall@comcast.net
Barney and I had the pleasure of visiting Pigeon Forge this past Saturday for the opening weekend of the Amato's & Miranda's "Swing Time" production at The Grand Majestic. Another bonus was that Barney's oldest son and family live in North Carolina. Whenever we get the opportunity for a weekend in Pigeon Forge, they met us there and we get to play "Granny J" and "Pops" for the weekend!
The Grand Majestic (www.thegrandmajestic.com) is conveniently located at light #3 on the main strip in Pigeon Forge. The Comfort Suites, which is right next door to The Grand Majestic, is very nice. Each room has double queen beds (comfortable with lots of pillows), a sleeper sofa in a small sitting area, refrigerator, microwave and balcony. The Amato's and Miranda's are working on making it a simple task for reservations. Presently, all reservations must be made through The Grand Majestic.
As we entered the theater, I immediately noticed all the "little" things. Things like, how the logo was on the center glass, the "GM" on the red trashcans, the logo on the glass at the snack bar, the smell of popcorn. There were beautiful plants, sent by friends wishing the best of success, positioned in the lobby area as well. Jackie is setting up a boutique area displaying merchandise and customized designer jeans. Doug has laid part of his wonderful dance floor in the upper lobby to host mini workshops for out-of-town groups. Mirrors guide you to the top of the stairs to the dance floor and to the balcony viewing seats.
On the wall to the right of the theatre's grand entrance, are photographs of the entire cast. What a sense of joy and excitement to see our friends' faces displayed proudly (including Dorothy Lubin) and to read about a little about their experiences. The remaining cast is very "seasoned" and mature performers. You immediately know that the show will be great.
The show begins as Doug "Colonel Parker" slowly makes his way down the aisle towards the stage. Doug sets the mood and starts telling the story of "Swing Time". It takes us back to the WWII era, after the remembrances of the County Fair and our first love. The choreography was wonderful (Barry, Dari Anne & Jackie), I just loved the costumes and the way the performances flowed from one scene to the next. The props were simple, but exactly what is needed to set the mood. The singing was powerful from each cast member. The humor was easily received and enjoyable. (We sat 2 rows behind John Robinson, so when he lau ghed, everybody laughed!) "Swing Time" is just wonderful. Mood swing from excitement in the beginning of the show, to falling in love, to the beginning of WWII, to the Gospel performance (this was my favorite part of the show), to the happy ending. You know you have enjoyed every minute when you feel like the show just started, and now it's 2 hours later! To cap off the evening, the cast leaves the stage by way of walking through the aisles of the theatre to the lobby. When you are leaving the theatre, you have the opportunity of meeting each cast member. That's all I'm saying about the show, you MUST plan a weekend to see for yourself. The show lasts approximately 2 hours with a short intermission.

Subject: Coulee Country Dancefest May 7 2-3, LaCrosse WI USA
From: Pollie Evans (
evanspb@wwt.net)
This past weekend I hosted the Coulee Country DanceFest in
LaCrosse WI USA. We had a large group attending, with 180 people from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. The dancers were both pattern partner dancers and line dancers.

Friday night was a Pizza Party and open dancing. I taught the Stroll and we had 3 stroll lines going across the room. Saturday was dance workshops with some contests and demonstration dances thrown in to give people time to rest. Our theme was Lost in the 50's and all of the demonstration dances during the afternoon were done to 1950's songs. They were: Wake Up Little Susie (song & dance), Mama Don't Dance to Rock Around the Clock, The Twist to Summertime Blues, Swingtime Boogie to Queen of the Hop, The Juliet to Rock N' Roll is King, Long Tall Sally (song & dance), Start to Sway (Sway), Crazy for Your Love to Too Much and Greased Lightnin'.

Many of the groups were in very unique 1950's style clothes and we crowned a Queen of the Hop and King of the Hop selecting people who both in dress and attitude represented the 1950's. There was a fun bubble blowing contest (with bubble gum) and a hula hoop contest - it's not as easy as it looks to do the electric slide with a hula hoop....

Line Dances taught were:

Hang Em' Up (Rob McKean) taught by Shirley Junemann taught to Honky Tonk Boots by Sammy Kershaw, Soakin' Wet (Larry Bass) danced to Rock in Your Shoes by Emily West, taught by George & Sandy Washbond, Ur Tears R Comin' (Jo Conroy) taught by John & Freida Utzig to the song Your Tears are Comin' by Montgomery Gentry.

Partner dances taught were:

Oh Carol (John & Freida Utzig choreographed the dance and taught it). The song is Oh Carol by Barbado.
Trail of Tears (DJ Dan & Wynette Miller choreographed this dance) and it was taught by John & Freida Utzig. It was selected by Trent & Mary Cummings who were unable to attend the workshop.
After our supper break George & Sandy Washbond taught a partner dance which also was danced as a line dance. The title is Lovin' You (for l or 2) and it is a 32 count, cha cha style dance done to one of my favorite songs, Just Got Started Lovin You by James Otto. Great little dance when you brain is full and so is your tummy!

In open dancing the event DJ's John & Freida Utzig of South Beloit Illinois did a great job of keeping the floor full. Requests were played and during the last two hours of each evening a new request list was created. That way if you had already left to get some rest we weren't playing your song when you were gone. Only dancers still on the floor were requesting what they wanted to hear and everyone continued to dance right up to the midnight hour.

LaCrosse WI USA is a lovely city in the springtime, right along the
Mississippi River and all the Spring flowering trees were in bloom, as well as daffodils and tulips. A rainy Saturday brought in more walk in dancers who couldn't be out in the farm field doing planting and that increased our crowd. All the snacks and cake provided quickly disappeared as dancers kept up their strength to stay on the dancefloor. Next year's event is scheduled for May 1-2, 2009 at the same banquet hall in LaCrosse WI, USA. Plan to come and visit us - the theme next year will be DOWN ON THE FARM which I think will be alot of fun!

SUBJECT:  UPDATE ON PATI FALL
This is an update on Pati Fall..............A message she sent me. Thank you, thank you for all your prayers. She does appreciate it so much!!
The cat scan revealed a blockage which was immediately referred to my doctor and then the colonoscopy was moved up from May 12th to last Friday. The results were not good. Showed a cancerous mass which will have to be removed surgically. We met with the oncologist yesterday and he said more than likely it will involved chemo but, of course, final decision when they get in there and they're calling it an urgent surgery.
Tomorrow morning we meet with the surgeon and we're expecting him to give me the actual date for surgery. Were expecting within next couple days.
I've heard from so many people who've had this procedure, or at least similar to it, and they are very encouraging. As far as they can tell from the pictures, it appears to be stage 3 cancer, with the worst at "4."
The oncologist said a good thing is it hasn't touched the liver and the other organs seem fine.

SUBJECT:  WHAT TRISH AND BOB BOESEL ARE TEACHING IN CALIF.
I'm back teaching again after being away for 6 weeks. Bob has been teaching the classes for me and has done a wonderful job (but I think he's thrilled to have me back-LOL).
There have been some really, really nice dances out lately - the most recent dances we've taught are: (I'm sure I've forgotten some dances, but these are some of the most popular ones that we've taught)
BELIEVE IN YOU (Darren (Daz) Bailey: this is a beautiful track by Vince Gill and there are some different steps/step combinations that make the dance so interesting and fit the music. Our class has really enjoyed this dance - I would highly recommend you take a look at this one if your class enjoys slow dances.
WONDERFUL (Paul McAdam): this is a nice easy dance to a very nice track by Annie Lennox. Our class really liked this one too, and I would recommend you take a look at this one as well.
FATHER FIGURE CHA (Merete Sevel): this is a beautiful cha cha (a nice change from all the NC2 dances) - this has been a favorite of the class as well. I recommend you take a look at this one. Well worth the effort.
SOLAMENTE (Ria Vos): this is a great latin track by Chayanne - the dance is a bit tricky, but feels great after you get the steps down. Another one I would recommend you take a look at.
DON'T (Barry Amato): this is a great dance that hits the beat perfectly - a great track by Shania Twain - again I would recommend you take a look at this one.
HELLO STRANGER (Scott Schrank): this appears on the surface to be a very easy dance, but with the wall changes, you really have to think on this one - this is a class favorite - great track by Queen Latifah. Again, take a look at this one for your advanced beginners/easy intermediate classes.
MR. OOH LA LA (Sandy Albano & Diane Petoskey): this is a really cute fun dance to a country track by Rissi Palmer.
THE SMELL OF YOUR SWEET PERFUME (Simon Ward): a fast waltz that has been very popular in our classes - take a look at this one if your class likes waltzes.
MISS YOU 2 (Niels Poulsen): this is an upper intermediate - advanced dance that was well received - not for the faint of heart.
TEARDROPS ON MY GUITAR (Bob Boesel): Bob's new dance that he taught at LAPD last month - won't say much, except to say that it has been very well received - nice dance to a great track (country) by Taylor Swift.
COULD IT BE YOU (Maggie Gallagher): beautiful upper level dance to a beautiful track by Cascada - very well received in class - take a look for you intermediate + classes.
GANGSTA'S PARADISE (Neville & Julie): fun music and was well received.
ELEVATOR(Neville & Julie): looks like another hit for Nev & Julie - this dance has been very well received - the kick and kick pattern is tricky to get just right, but we keep working on it!! LOL
IRISH SPIRIT (Maggie Gallagher): a fast & furious Irish dance that has been very popular.
FIRE ON ICE (Kate Sala): this one seems to be a hit in all classes
BLACK & GOLD (Teresa & Vera): this is another one that seems to be a hit in all classes
INSIDE OUT (Kim Ray): very popular dances in all classes
WHY DO I LOVE YOU (Roy Thompson): very well received - I would recommend this dance.
CHEMISTRY (Simon Ward): we taught this one as a floor split for Much Obliged which we already dance - neither are easy dances - a great track by Mary J. Blige
Some beginner dances that we've been teaching:
HIT THE FLOOR (Coral Tucker): a great beginner's dance to use as a split for Those Applebottom Jeans
YOU MAKE MY DREAMS (Louis James Sequeira): this is another great beginner dance
PEACHES & CREAM (Peter & Alison): another great beginner dance
WAKE UP CALL (Bob Boesel): another good beginner dance
MOONLIGHT MADNESS (Derek Robinson): this is a very nice upper beginner/easy intermediate dance that the classes have really enjoyed
HURRICANE (Sal Gonzalez): also a hit in our classes - a great beginner dance
ROCKS IN MY SHOES (Jo & John Kinser): a good beginner dance
Current favorites: Tattoo, Could It Be Forever, Angel of the Morning, Cheater, Teardrops on My Guitar, The Smell of Your Sweet Perfume

SUBJECT:  WHAT CELIA AND GEOFF ARE TEACHING IN THE UK
Last night was last class before our holidays (typing this on plane
on way to Marco Island, Florida) so decided to teach something nice and easy and one that a few of the class had already learnt at other classes. We taught "Our First Love" choreographed by Robert Lindsey, Kim Ray, Vivienne Scott & Fred Buckley to "Mi Primeur Amor" by Belle Perez.. A 64 count 4 wall dance (with a restart during the 3rd wall) that went down very well with our class, we danced it three times with almost everyone on the floor each time.

Re-capped last week's dance, Kate Sala's "Fire On Ice", this is most certainly a very big hit with our class and one that should stick
around for some time. Also re-capped T & V's "Black & Gold" and Peter & Alison's "Catch The Rain", both very popular.

Other dances danced during the night were It's Up To You, Walk with Me, A Gigolo, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Summer Breeze, Silver Moon, Bosa Nova, Islands in the Stream, Love Today, Rebel Amor, Amor de Hielo, Walk the Line, My New Life, Firecracker, Charanga, Meaning of Love, Inside Out, The Dance, Touch Me Like That, Crazy Foot Mambo, Ready to Go, Love Is a Game, So Glamorous, It's Murda, Whole Lot of Leaving & Inside Your Heaven.

Next two weeks Marilyn & Bernie will be looking after the class for
us so it's business as uaual and the Shelf Village Hall Social on
Saturday May 17th will also be hosted by them as our holiday had
already been arranged before we took over these Socials. Shelf Social starts 8.00 pm with non stop dancing til 11.30 pm, all details on our website

SUBJECT : ASIAN LINE DANCE CRUISE 2008
FROM : The Lim Sisters 156 , Malaysia
Hi,
We are the Lim Sisters 156 from Malaysia. We would like to sincerely thank Judy Chen for organizing the Asian Line Dance Cruise 2008 event. It was a monumental task gathering dancers from different countries to Shanghai. Coordinating our arrivals and departures was no small matter as the ship terminal buildings in Shanghai were still under construction. We did in fact felt that we were being ' shanghaied ' to be sold off at one point of our departure. True to form Judy Chen got that sorted with a phone-call. So All's Well That Ends Well.
We applaud Judy Chen for her courage in carrying out the event and we salute Larry, Judy's husband for paying the initial deposit of 500USD per cabin for all of us and there were many of us. It was a HUGE amount of money for one person to pay so that the rest of us could enjoy. If it wasn't for his generosity, we would not have been able to enjoy the great early bird deal. There was plenty to do and eat on board the ship. We were spoilt for choices. There was dancing almost every night.
We had great line dance instructors on board with us too. There was "The Effervescent High-Up-In-The DJ Deck Goddess" Jill Babinec, The Gracious Lina Choi, The Elegant Marilyn Mcneal, The Beautiful Rachael McE, and " The Courageous" Judy Chen . Then the guys, " The If-In-Doubt Do A Shuffle" Simon Ward who amazingly taught his "Sweet Perfume" with the raging Pacific Ocean on one wall and people playing PING PONG on the other wall. Last but not least there was The Great Scott Blevins himself who danced his "Feed The Fetish" so magnificently that even the dolphins came to join us.
We have many wonderful memories of the event and we thank Judy Chen for them
Thank you.
