I'd like to take advantage of Carol's newsletter to reach out to the over 200 wonderful dancers who attended our third annual WOW Line Dance Spectacular at the Marriott Hotel at Newark International Airport in NJ on Sept 3 - 6. These dancers came from everywhere, including Arizona, Illinois, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and even Calgary & Toronto Canada. Even our instructor traveled from France & the infamous Jersey Girls drove north from the shore!
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at the workshops, open dancing, and the Saturday night Show. I want to thank my teaching staff: Rachael McEnaney, Scott Blevins, Roy Verdonk, Kate Sala, Cato Larsen, Max Perry, Peter Metelnick, Kathy Hunyadi, Alison Biggs, John Robinson, Dancin' Dean, Marilyn McNeal, Debi Pancoast, Stompin' Sue & Rosie Multari.
A special Thank You to Stompin' Sue for running the Beginner Program, Max Perry for the Saturday night Show & Rosie Multari for all her help prior to the weekend. Thanks to Wildman Louie St George for being an accommodating deejay all weekend. He kept the dancers moving until after 4 AM every night! Thanks to our Videographer, CJ and to Kaz Ozaki for always being there with her camera. Thanks to Ray McNeal, Bruno Multari & Cynthia Sklublak for manning the Registration Desk all weekend. Thanks to my daughter & son-in-law, Chrissie & Jason, for their help assistance as well.
And I also want to mention that through our 50/50 raffle, we were able to raise $1225 to donate to the Typhoon Morakot Relief Fund through the Tzu-Chi Budhhist Temple. A special thanks to Ann Hui from Toronto, Canada who won the raffle and donated her winnings.
I would like to thank everyone again for coming and if you did not have a chance to fill out a Comment Form, please feel free to email me with your comments and suggestions.

When I walked into the NJ Liberty airport today, I felt so sad that I had to leave all of my wonderful friends behind and go home. WOW’s weekend is really a blessing. I never knew I could experience such a modest and elegant atmosphere from the east coast. You polite people of the east just made me realize that “wild wild west” was represented for.
“Yeehaa!”
The popular dances taught in the WOW event are:
Rachael’s Jesse James, She will be loved, Strobe Light, Toes, and Go baby Go
Roy’s Redcoat Tiger, Do the Hoedown, Samba HUH, The Lala Dance and Angie
Kate’s Under a Spell, Shakatak, and Searching
Cato’s Bella Bella, Run Sue Run and Swingin’ R’s
Peter & Alison’s Holding On to Yesterday and Run
Max’s Waltz is the Key, Possibility Foxtrot, Texas, and Partrizio’s Rumba
John’s Crazy about U and Human Dancer
Amato’s Smash It
Scott’s Food Chain, Broken Glass and Coochie Bang Bang
Dances not taught by the choreographer:
Marilyn: Let me Love You, For The First Time and Rumba Breeze
Debi: Spanish Fly
Kathy: Evergreen
Rosie: Bad Influence
Judy: La Secret
Roy: J HO
Scott: Mad World and Hell If I
Judy, you planted a rose in the New York metropolitan and you called it WOW. I can see it bloom today. You made it after 3 years, my dear friend!
The unique WELCOME PARTY, THE WORLD BEST INSTRUCTORS, THE FRIENDLY STAFF….. and the most: YOU HAVE THE PEOPLE!!
I am so proud of you. Life is not that bad after all, ISN’T IT?
Congratulation!

WOW! Yes, it was a memorable event in all ways! Judy Chen is the ultimate hostess and always exceeds our expectations. This was our first time at WOW and we enjoyed every moment of the weekend. A fabulous array of instructors taught over 100 dances in 4 continuous rooms. The Marriott hotel is right across from the airport with easy transportation to New York. I have to tell you about our trips to the city first!
Ray and I traveled with Carol, Jan, Brenda, Diane, Barbara, and Doreen and arrived Wednesday afternoo n. We hired our driver, Larry, to take us to Manhattan for the evening. He was perfect for our group! We had a GREAT dinner at Carmine’s and saw HAIR. After a few of Larry’s “detours” we got back to the hotel around 1AM.
But did we rest? NO! At 5AM we got up again to go BACK to the city. WHY? These girls had a plan to get Ocala on the TODAY show! We took the shuttle to the airport, then the train to Penn Station, and didn’t notice the subway right there (DUH – it was too early) so we WALKED 20 blocks to Rockefeller Center. Everyone but “my honey” who was our chaperone, had on pink flamingo T-Shirts that said WOW, Wild Ocala Women, a huge banner with our pictures and “Dancin’ with Marilyn in Ocala, Florida” on it, and springy “I love NY” heart headbands. Needless to say, they noticed us! Cute cameraman Dave saw us first and promised to interview us at the break. Weather Girl Leslie came right over to us and on the spot asked us to show her a line dance –ON LIVE TV! No time to think about it, we volunteered Darlene and tossed her in front of the camera! Smart girl, did the Cupid Shuffle! Leslie said she8 0d rather hang out with us than go back to work!
It was all over in 30 seconds, but the memory will last a lifetime! Best of all, Meredith came out after the show, hugged each of us, autographed our banner and posed with us for pictures. After it aired, all our cell phones were ringing from family and friends all over the states. They SAW us on the TODAY show! WOW!
We then ate breakfast at a local NY deli to end a perfect morning. The girls toured the city all day, while Ray and I headed back to the hotel on the trains (the subway this time) for the evening plans. Gary and Maria drove to the event and joined us on Thursday, along with Kathy G. from Miami. The weekend was just starting.
THANKS girls, for planning these=2 0extra days that added so much fun to our trip. We love y’all and will remember it always. Pictures will be on my website, and hopefully the live video of that day!
Judy welcomed all dancers with an incredible dinner on Thursday night, including SHUSHI! (Rachael was happy.) There was a wonderful array of food presented. We danced then tried to get some rest for a couple of hours.
I was truly honored to be on staff at this event with top instructors that I admire and respect for their talents. My own classes were:
FOR THE FIRST TIME – Niels Poulsen – a most beautiful NC2. (my favorite)
LET ME LOVE YOU – Classic MIL from 2002 making a great comeback.
RUMBA BREEZE – Michele Perron and Michele Burton – VERY pretty!
INCLINATION FOR SYNCOPATION – Paul McAdams – Michael Jackson’s Remember the Time. Cool dance.
DAYLIGHT – Dee Musk – nice west coast.
MAN IN THE MIRROR – Clair Pulpher – Masters in Line Choreography Overall Winner in UK last month to great Michael Jackson music. Check it out, VERY cool.
SCOOBY DOO – Robbie McGowan Hickey – Easy Intermediate to Alex Swings and Oscar Sings.
SWINGIN’ IN THE RAIN – Larry Hayden – B/I This is a fun, local favorite.
AY AMOR – Ria Vos – B/I Slow cha cha, popular dance.
The complete dance schedule is on the WOW website for your review. No time to take many classes but a few that I did take were Rachael’s SHE WILL BE LOVED, not so easy but wonderful. Loved it. She taught many other cool ones too. HELL IF I (Kinsers) taught by Scott. Loved it along with his current hits. Didn’t take STRENGTH IN NUMBES by Peter and Alison, but it looked beautiful and they had many more. Debbie taught a new one called SPANISH FLY, very cool. Cato’s included FAIRY TALES and SWINGIN’ R’s. John ‘s included CHAMPAGHE ON ICE (Dornsteds), which I regret missing in the past! Roy Verdonk was one hilarious bunch of energy! DO THE HOEDOWN and ISN’T SHE LOVELY were two mentioned by many dancers. Kate Sala taught UNDER A SPELL, Judy taught LA SECRET and Barry SMASH IT was a hit. Kathy brought back EVERGREEN, an old favorite. Over 100 dances were on the schedule and provided an excellent variety of music on style for all dancers. Barry was our MC too, a real professional, and it was great seeing him again.
Stompin’ Sue provided a huge array of beginner dances and most of the instructors also included easy ones. Mentioned as favorites by others were I LIED, taught by Dean, GO NOW, taught by Max, LAY IT ON THE LINE & BAD INFLUENCE, taught by Rosie. Sue was DJ in the beginner room and Louie was at his best in our main ballroom. He played a great mix of old and new, teaches and requests. There are so many good dances, but he always keeps the floor full and varied. CJ’s videos will be out in no time – he’s the best!
The event was first class. Judy’s hospitality shines and we all feel special, whether on staff or as a registered participant. The menu she chose for the Saturday night dinner and welcome party was outstanding. The dance schedule was packed. The whole weekend atmosphere was relaxed, pleasant and professional. Judy raised over $1200 for the victims of the typhoon in Taiwan in a 50/50 drawing and the winner Anne, also donated her share to this cause.
Thank you Judy, for the opportunity to teach for you. Ray and I and our Ocala dancers had a wonderful time, as I’m sure everyone else did!
WOW will return in 2011 to this hotel. Next year, Judy is taking it to Shanghai, with the opportunity to tour China afterwards if you stay a few days. Save up and expand your dancing adventures!
I’ll post again tomorrow with Midnight Rodeo information and a surprise for you too!

Last weekend was the 2009 WOW! Line Dance Event at the Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark NJ. Had some regular USA instructors/choreographers as well as those who do not make it across the pond often—Kate Sala, Roy Verdonk. I took a variety of lessons from a variety of instructors to a variety of song selections, genres, and tempo. I arrived on Thursday afternoon to help DJ Louie unload and set up (next time attention will be on “the board”). Arriving as the superb floor (Dance Jam Productions) was being laid down in the main ballroom, it’s amazing to see the transformation from a tables and chairs “conference” to a dance event in a matter of hours between the floor workers and volunteers, DJs, and hotel staff.
Thursday night was wonderful with a h’orderves hour and open dancing. There was plenty of floor space and dance selection was definitely a wide variety. Demo’s on Thursday night took, what felt like, a long time, but glad they were Thursday night rather than Friday morning (good call Judy). From what I heard, plenty of requests were played including some old ones—HEARTBREAKER, MY GREEK #1, SLOW BURN, BABY BELIEVE, BURNING.
Dance lessons that I took:
REDCOAT TIGER (taught by Roy Verdonk). Surprisingly I liked this dance as many from my local dance community were taking it. Roy did an excellent job teaching this A-B dance (as I never took a class from him before). The three tags in the dance are quite easy and the first two are back-to-back; the third tag is the same as tag #2, just s…l…o…w…e…r. Great to have this now as we’ll be roaring and cheering Maggie’s presence in Tampa come November!
HUMAN DANCER (taught by John Robinson). Infectious song as soon as I heard it on BBC Radio 1 some time ago. I know John has been teaching this and glad it was selected for WOW! Fast-paced dance that you have to listen to the music the first 2.5 walls, until the beat really kicks in, but when it does….you know it. Dance fits the music well. So get off your knees looking answers, and answer the question, Are we human or are we dancers? YES and YES.
HELL IF I (taught by Scott Blevins). This is my second teach of this dance by Scott plus a teach of my own to my local dancers. But hell if I would not get this dance and restart committed to memory now! Great dance by the Kinsers and Mark Furnell to an infectious song. If you like smooth coaster steps, this dance is definitely for you!
GO BABY GO (Rachael McEnaney). Second teach of this dance that has gone by the wayside but the song is just fun with a great pop beat. Nothing hard, even with one restart. After a couple of times dancing it, you’ll be singing along.
SWINGIN’ Rs (taught by Naughty Cato Larsen). What a classic dance to bring back that a new bird like me never learned (wish more choreographers would teach at least one old/classic dance per event). The demo between Kate, Cato, and Rachael sold everyone I was sitting near on Thursday night, but because this was a late teach on Friday, most were probably spent. Just by watching the demo, this dance reminded me a lot of Rob Glover’s dance from Boston Showdown where the song told the dancer what steps to do (minus the pigeon head), just because of the variety of steps in Swingin’ Rs. The steps in Swingin’ Rs are not difficult, the speed is just faaaaaaaaaaaaast and there is no breathing room. Gotta’ still work on those tap steps, but by Windy City I hope to be smacking the floor with my hand along with Cato!
BROKEN GLASS (Scott Blevins). Because I danced on shattered glass on Thursday night, I told myself I better get a re-teach of this dance…make it #3 or #4. The trickiest 8-count bit (“where everyone loses it”) that I overcame months ago turned was stained glass on Thursday night turned into Broken Glass on Friday night and the rest of the weekend. Definitely one you gotta’ keep dancing but well worth it.
SHE WILL BE LOVED (Rachael McEnaney). This is to a special version of Maroon 5’s song of the same name. The dance is faster than I anticipated but well worth it. Another well choreographed line dance by Rachael that will hopefully be taught at Windy City and not only will SHE be loved but the dance will also.
STROBE LIGHTS (Rachael McEnaney). Another great dance by Rachael that is on the other end of the spectrum from other dances she taught this WOW weekend. Definitely one of the highlights for me this workshop weekend as the song has grown on me ever since the dance was publicized. So get out your glow sticks along with the strobe lights.
Although not on the schedule, a small group of us asked Barry Amato if he would review his dance WHERE I BELONG that I originally learned at World’s two years ago. Did not hear much of it since, but the track by Trisha Yearwood is beautiful and the dance is just as wonderful. During a break on Saturday afternoon, we went off the lobby as he held a mini-walk through. It was great to see a several dancers on the floor Saturday night when the song was played.
SPANISH FLY (taught by Debi Pancoast). Great track to a dance choreographed by Debbie McLaughlin from the UK. Has many spins which at slower speed felt good, but I did not completely work myself up to tempo to include them all. Since Debbie and Debi will be at Windy City, this will take some practice.
LET ME LOVE YOU (taught by Marilyn McNeal). Classic dance by MIL that I first saw at World’s last year, learned from Rachael in the Mediterranean this year, but this teach by Marilyn at WOW solidified my problem areas (I have not been dancing this locally as much as I should be). The dance is choreographed to [nearly] every beat of the song and it flows perfectly.
MAD WORLD (taught by Scott Blevins). Fast paced NC2 dance by Maurice Rowe to a song by American Idol runner up Adam Lambert. Well choreographed, just have to take small, small steps. While I can hear the re-start in the song, until now, I always passed it (even after Maurice walked me through the dance). “And I find it kind of funny…I find it kind of sad,” sometimes a third teach is all one needs because “it’s a very, very mad world…”
Lots to practice between now and Windy City in just one month! Thank you for a great weekend, Judy. The buffet dinner on Saturday night was excellent and the Michael Jackson tribute show was cute….everyone was indeed Speechless watching Rachael’s solo and then the lovely Dari Anne Blevins dancing with Barry.

Just a note to say that I really enjoyed WOW. From the fancy hors d'oeuvres on Thursday to the "nap in the sky" on the way home, it was a great weekend. I especially enjoyed open dance this event. There was a point where Louie was trying to kill us, with "You Don't You Won't", "Jukebox", "Swing Time Boogie" and other fast ones all in a row. But there was a wonderful mix of new and old dances. I danced "Possibility Foxtrot" with Max. Almost got "Give it Back" with Rachael. There was no hope for me with "Dreamin" with Barry Amato.
The classes were also a mix of classics and new dances.
Judy Chen is a hostess during the event, making sure everyone is treated well. Next year her event will be in Shanghai, but in 2011, it will again be in the US. I recommend it.
FROM: Sue Hall, Calgary Alberta
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to so many people who welcomed those of us from Calgary who attended the WOW event. Judy and her crew of volunteers did an outstanding job from start to finish. There was a good mix of instructors and diversity of workshops for all levels. There were so many good new dances and I really enjoyed the chance to learn some "oldies" that were revived from years ago that I had never learned.
Going to an event from western Canada to eastern U.S. was a great experience for us just to watch some very talented dancers who obviously put a lot of time and energy into learning and retaining so many dances. Louie did a great job at keeping dancers happy and played what I thought was a good mix of new and old dances. I still love those old dances like Shake Yourself Loose, Keep It Burning, Hideaway Cha, Texas, Simplemente, MJ Moves, etc. and it was good to see dancers still packing the floor with them. It's good to
see that some dances just don't die.
As always, Rachael was stunning to watch on the floor and such a good and patient instructor. I love it when she sings the counts:-) Roy, thank you for coming and dancing Bleeding Love with us in the other dance room.....still a favorite dance and a beautiful song. I'm still undecided as to who had more energy - John or Roy. Both are so personable and fun to watch and always smiling and laughing. Kathy - thanks for teaching Hear the
Music in the Air or "Shake Yourself Loose, Part 2"! You brought church to the floor on Sunday:-) Rosie has a wonderful sense of humour and at the end of the day when we were hot, tired and sweaty, she made learning Bad Influence a lot of fun. Peter & Alison had time after a workshop to introduce their new dance, Home Sweet Home, a really nice nightclub.
All in all, we spent a great week visiting New Jersey/New York, sightseeing, going to see Jersey Boys, shopping, catching up with old friends and making new ones and the opportunity to take in WOW. Thank you all for a great experience! Looking forward to seeing many of you in Vegas.
FROM: Ira Weisburd (Boca Raton, Florida) dancewithira@comcast.net
We ended our trip by taking in the much anticipated WOW Line Dance Event in Newark, New Jersey. It was my first Line Dance Event and Diane’s first out of state event, so we both were looking forward to this new experience. Needless to say, we both had a wonderful time. We enjoyed meeting so many wonderful, warm and friendly line dancers from everywhere. We made many new friends and will have many fond memories from this event. The instructors were a delight to learn from. Each one had their own particular style and we tried to sample each one on the program.
The best part of attending an event like this for me, was to put a face on the dances that we have learned to love over the years. Now, everytime I do a dance from Max or Kathy or Cato or Peter or Marilyn or Rosie or Alison or John or Kate or Sue or Rachael or Roy etc., it will be like they are right there. The images from this weekend will remain with me for many years to come.
Judy Chen’s hospitality really came through at this weekend. As an event organizer myself, producing up to 10 Big “COPA” Dance Events a year, I want to applaud her for a very well planned event. I was also very flattered to learn that my new line dance CUMBIA SEMANA had been selected to be taught in the very first teaching session of the weekend. It was taught beautifully by Stompin’ Sue Wetzel who told me that on the last night (after I had gone to bed), it filled the floor.
Thank you for an experience that will last a lifetime.
I just uploaded what might be the first glimpse of the Spectacular WOW Weekend in Newark, New Jersey. Here I am demoing my new dance CUMBIA SEMANA for the first time on Friday night in the Main Ballroom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXv5H7sRyPM

This was our first time attending the WOW event. We expected great food, instructors and workshops. We were not disappointed. Others have listed the 80+ workshops that were offered. I’ll touch on some of the ones we attended. Judy and her staff and volunteers kept the event running smoothly. Judy's event reflects her elegance and good taste in dance, food, people and accommodations.
HOTEL – We drove to Newark, NJ from the Boston area and unnerved at the thought of New York traffic, took the route through Connecticut and in New York across the Tappan Zee and over to New Jersey via the Garden State Parkway. That was less stressful. The Newark Liberty International Marriott, Newark, NJ has very comfortable guest rooms. Courteous staff greeted us whenever we had questions. The pools (indoor and outdoor) offered a relaxing retreat during the breaks from dancing. Meals were available in the hotel restaurant at reasonable buffet prices. Ballroom and conference room hard wood dance floors were good to dance on. The conference rooms were comfortably cool and sometimes got a little warm when larger than normal crowds got up to dance.
OPEN DANCING – Thursday evening Wildman Louie welcomed us to a great mix of old and new and the hotel served up a delicious buffet including tender pork roast and beef tenderloin, sushi bar, marinated and cooked vegetables, pizza, and cold cuts. Open dancing was available again on Friday night and Saturday nights with Wildman Louie in the main ballroom and Stompin Sue in the Columbia Room (where the beginner workshops were held). First evening in open dance, I saw a new dance called BE ON TIME that had nice music and looked interesting.
The schedule was filled with workshops by day with open dance at night. However, I really missed open dance during the day too. These are moments when you can regroup, relax, meet up with friends, attempt something you just learned, or dance the familiar just to keep warmed up. This is also a time when you can spot other new dances that you might want to learn. That sometimes triggers a bonus teach. On Sunday, Wildman Louie threw in some open dancing for an hour at lunchtime and it felt just right.
DANCE WORKSHOP DEMOS – Demos for the next day workshops went on for an hour+ on Thursday and Friday evenings. We sat a bit too long but there were many workshops to cover. There were supposed to be review teaches in the evening but I never found out what happened to them (either cancelled or too busy dancing).
INSTRUCTORS – great American and European line-up, personable, talented and dancer friendly. We missed Rachel at the Line Dance Showdown and were looking forward to seeing her. Many danced with us during open dance too.
WORKSHOPS – ran smoothly and on time.
Friday:
FOR THE FIRST TIME (I) (c Niels Poulsen) taught by Marilyn McNeal. Room was packed. Fortunately, some seemed already familiar with the dance. Looked forward to seeing another of Niels creations after learning I HELD YOUR HAND. This one is manageable night club but need to pay close attention during the first 2 eight counts which contain the clever 2 count sweep. Finally figured it out after getting home. Liked this one.
UNDER A SPELL (I) (c Kate Sala). First time meting Kate. Kate is very friendly, smart and a good teacher. Kate called this a tango sort of. It was just fun with catchy music. Liked this one.
JESSE JAMES (I) (c Rachel McEnaney) Already a favorite and wanted a lesson with Rachel.
COOCHIE BANG BANG (I) (c Scott Blevins) Already a favorite and wanted a lesson with Scott.
HELL IF I (I) (c Kinsers and Furnell) taught by Scott Blevins. Already learned this and wanted a lesson with Scott.
(Off to the swimming pool to cool off.)
Saturday
ANGIE (c Roy Verdonk, Wil Bos, Raymond Sarlemijn) first time meeting Roy. Roy is personable, talented, energetic and fun in open dance. While teaching Roy is still personable and very focused on teaching the dance well and free of distractions. Reminded me a little of dancing POETRY IN MOTION to Hotel California. I enjoyed this flowing night club with well placed syncopation that hit the guitar notes.
BROKEN GLASS (I) (c Scott Blevins) Already learned this and wanted a lesson with Scott.
SHE WILL BE LOVED (A) (c Rachel McEnaney) Clearly the most challenging due to the complex dance steps, timing and the music. Sort of west coast swing to jazz. Really liked this one and Rachel is an amazing dancer and teacher.
STROBE LIGHTS (I) (c Rachel McEnaney) Already learned this and wanted a lesson with Rachel.
SMASH IT (I) (c Barry Amato) with feet that refused any more dancing, I took the lesson sitting down and danced it later in the evening. Barry demoed each eight count in the center of the group prior to teaching which helped with visualizing the pattern of the dance. A hustle with pop sound.
SAMBA HUH (c Darren Bailey) taught by Roy Verdonk) Had seen Roy demo this with great samba styling, voltas, samba diamond, but was sold when he did toe touches with wiggles (boto caras?). You can let your inner samba child loose with this one.
Sunday
SHAKATACK (I) (c Kate Sala ). Classic that many of us just needed a solid reminder of the dance steps to get dancing again. Room was packed.
SHE BELIEVES (I) Kate Sala threw in a bonus teach of this lovely night club.
MAD WORLD (I/A) (c Maurice Rowe) taught by Scott Blevins. Already learned this and wanted another lesson. Room was really packed making it difficult to move. Scott was sandwiched early by two dancers spinning in from left and right early on during the dance practice. Saw a few collisions during the teach. Great dance.
I ended up retaking several difficult ones for improvement sake and took a few new ones to learn from new instructors.
SATURDAY DINNER AND SHOW – Met folks from Georgia, Pennsylvania, Australia (?) and Missouri during dance and dinner. Food was excellent – especially liked the seafood paella with lobster and mussels. We enjoyed a brief tribute show to Michael Jackson music with a room quieting interpretive solo by Rachel dancing SPEECHLESS. Mostly it was something to see all the instructors together including a last minute duo with Barry Amato and guest appearance by Dari-Anne Blevins. Barry looked a little scared.
Thanks Judy and Christine (Judy’s daughter) for a fun weekend.
